Second Life

I was browsing into sites and checking out some new media news and what’s going on around the globe… but I keep on coming across this subject of “second life” whom of which I find it very controversial and it really tempts me to keep on looking into this subject more and more. Second life is apparently an internet based virtual world developed by Linden lab. It came to international attention through mainstream news media between the years 2006-2007.Its a free downloadable program and it is actually called the Second Life Viewer therefore briefly what users do is they interact with eachother through motional avatars providing them with an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a metaverse. Therefore what residents can do is meet other residents, explore, socialize , participate in different activities and even create and trade items. Some people might just see it as a game but if we take a step back and look a bit more in depth on how much power and impact this kind of world can have on us in the near future it is amazing and at the same time scary. So a nice way to start on this research could be the “SWOT” that stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Hoping to get some opinions and parallel to that find my path to study more about second life

As you said maggie, through second life people have the opportunity to meet other people and share their ideas but Second Life is not only sharing ideas ! The last 2-4 years many companies saw the opportunity of advertising themselves (Second Life has thousands of users) and they buy, create small islands to establish their Second LIfe store. Radio 1 did that and they were organizing many events in Second Life... so, what is the result of that?

Radio 1 gained more market percentage in real life...

The opportunities of Second Life are obvious

Galatis I agree with what you wrote, as I have mentioned before a lot of people see it as a game but its something way beyond. A lot of companies have found a profitable way through second life, as you said companies have already started using it for advertising and promotions a nice example would be Apple wanting to make the online shopping experience less sterile, and more intuitive, fun, and interactive. One way to achieve that would certainly be to enter Second Life, where stores are populated by avatars, making it more like shopping in a physical store.
Certainly Apple wouldn’t be the first high profile company to enter Second Life, and try to use the virtual world as another place to sell its products. IBM and Nike are two global brands which are now already dominant in Second Life i could go on but lets just take it one step at a time. Here is a little something for you :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovL4pZod_gw

I like the idea of people having real jobs by creating and selling things in Second Life, but maybe I am stuck in reality too much to really go into a virtual world and create my life there, although I did that before in the Metro (text based world in the 90's).
